Very good fly on the wall documentary. Follow the highs and lows of the British lions Squad Tour of South Africa in 1997. |

In 1997, Living with Lions – the behind the scenes story of the British & Irish Lions Tour of South Africa – was acclaimed as one of the greatest sports films ever made. Now, 12 years on, the Lions are back in South Africa and so are our film crew, recording every minute of what was one of the greatest Lions Test Series of all time.
With unprecedented access to all areas of the Tour, Living with the Pride is the most intimate, honest and intense portrait of life as a Lion ever produced. From the Pennyhill Park training camp to the magnificent final Test victory in Johannesburg, this is the inside story of how players who are normally the fiercest of opponents turned themselves into a band of brothers desperate to restore pride to The Jersey. Their grueling 10-match tour of the World Champions’ back yard asked questions of the players’ mental and physical strength like never before. Lions legend and Head Coach Ian McGeechan worked closely with our film crew to make an astonishing no-holds-barred documentary. With access to every player, an open door to every team meeting, training session, selection meeting as well as excusive access to the passion, fury and ultimately elation of the Lions dressing room, this is a unique and uncompromising insight into life on a Lions Tour, described by Tour Manager Gerald Davies as ‘The last great adventure in rugby’. No Lions Series has ever been closer, with many commentators describing the second Test as ‘the greatest rugby match ever’. Sometimes hilarious, but often brutal, bruising and moving, Living With The Pride is the official and exclusive behind the scenes story of one of the most exhilarating, emotional and memorable sports tours of all time. Over 100 minutes of DVD extras including: All the team and management speeches in their entirety |

DVD Description For the first time ever in New Zealand, the Lions were accompanied by a film crew recording every detail of an incredible six week adventure, from the moment they left the UK to the last kick of the third and final test in Auckland. Only once in rugby history, had the British and Irish Lions conquered the mighty All Blacks on New Zealand soil. The task was a massive one and ‘Inside the Lions Den’ reveals the passion and the pride of the Touring party as they battled to achieve an almost impossible dream. Off the field they planned, trained and worked as a truly professional unit. On the field the Lions were confronted with an awesome challenge and some of the most physical and highly skilled performers in the Southern Hemisphere. Emotive, often hilarious, occasionally desperately sad but always absolutely riveting, this is the film all rugby fans have been waiting for. Synopsis |

As thoughts turn to the 2005 tour it occurred to me that some people might consider picking up the last tour on DVD. My advice if you’re even considering this is buy it. 100%. I bought this DVD about two years ago and, in my collection of over 150 films, tv and sporting title, it has to rank as the best and the best value DVD of the lot. The highlights DVD is great, containing extended highlights of the fantastic action on the tour. From the early mismatches to Wilkinson’s masterclass against the Reds, to the Waratahs War, to the joy of Robinson and O’Driscoll in the first test, to the redemption of Dawson in the heartstopping ACT game, to Jonny’s try in the 3rd test (looks simple, but a moment of pure class), to the bitter disappointment of a test series defeat and everything in between. A breathtaking, rollercoaster ride worth the price on its own. But it’s just build up to the main event. The Lions documentary is fantastic. Period. Enfused with funny and emotional moments it goes far beyond other sports films. Throughout you really get a sense of the different characters that make up a tour. From the serious, focused and professional Wilkinson, Johnson and Hill, to the hilarious antics of Healey, Wood and Henderson. You feel you really get to know the team and I for one felt part of the misery when it all finally ended in defeat, at the end of the over two hour long film. Some moments to look for: Shaggy on the maracas Simon Taylor’s birthday speech The eating habits of Darren Morris Table Tennis Dallaglio’s farewell Austin Healey’s golf swing Richard Hill on the phone in the corridor Balshaw looking for his Gumshield Lawrence’s swearing world record The fish Resterant Fishing with Vickery The goal kicking conversation Greenwood looking for his #1′s ‘You couldn’t have done any more boys’ Jonny alone at the end If you have any interest in the Lions or rugby buy this. If you don’t buy it anyway. I really cannot stress this enough. Roll on the 2005 DVD |
